Countdown Timer

Set a duration, watch the seconds tick down, get notified when it hits zero.

How to use the countdown timer

  1. Pick a preset (1 min, 5 min, 10 min, 25 min, or 1 hour) — or type the exact duration in the Hours / Minutes / Seconds fields.
  2. Press Start. Your last duration is remembered, so refreshing the page won’t lose your settings.
  3. When the countdown reaches zero, you’ll get a desktop notification (if you allow it) and the title bar will keep flashing the time until you reset.
  4. Press Pause at any moment; Reset restores the full duration without changing your inputs.

The timer uses your computer’s clock, so it stays accurate even if the browser throttles a background tab.

When a countdown beats a Pomodoro

Pomodoros are rigid by design — 25 minutes work, 5 minutes break, repeat. A countdown is the right tool when:

  • You’re cooking. Pasta wants 9 minutes, eggs want 6 minutes, focaccia wants 22.
  • You’re timeboxing a meeting. “We have 30 minutes for this discussion” lands much harder when there’s a visible clock.
  • You’re playing a game with kids. “Five more minutes” is more credible when it’s on screen.
  • You’re rate-limiting a habit. “I’ll scroll for 10 minutes” — and then actually stop.

Why a browser-based countdown beats a phone

  • No interruptions. Your phone timer competes with messages, calls, and notifications. The browser timer is just a tab.
  • Already where you work. If you spend your day in the browser, the timer is one tab away — not a context switch.
  • Multiple at once. Open the timer in two tabs and run two independent countdowns. Try that on a phone.
  • Sharable. Send the URL — your colleague gets the same tool, no install.

Frequently asked questions

Will the countdown keep running if I close the tab? No. The timer lives in the page; closing the tab ends it. Switching tabs is fine — the countdown keeps ticking.

Does it work offline? Yes, once the page has loaded. There’s no server involved. (PWA install with full offline support is coming in Phase 5.)

Can I get a sound when it ends? A browser notification fires when the countdown ends, which most operating systems play with a sound. A built-in alarm sound option is on the roadmap.

Why is the input limited to 23 hours? For longer events you’re better off scheduling a calendar reminder. The countdown is meant for sub-day intervals.

Why does the title bar show the time? So you can see the countdown even if the tab isn’t focused. Most browsers will keep the title visible in the tab bar.
